Usage: A metabolite of Estradiol. An estrogenic metabolite considerably less potent than the hormone Estradiol. pharmaceutical material, Steroid hormone, estrogen.
Product Description:
Estriol is a metabolite of 17β-estradiol with much lower biological activity. It is the primary estrogen found in the urine. Large quantities of estriol and estrone are produced by the placenta during pregnancy. These are also the primary estrogens produced by adipose tissue in men and in post-menopausal women.
Though initial research in the 1970s suggested it could be used therapeutically as an estrogen, subsequent research failed to confirm this hypothesis. In pregnant women with multiple sclerosis, estriol reduces the disease's symptoms noticeably, according to researchers at UCLA's Geffen Medical School.
Estriol is a natural estrogen which is associated with pregnancy. In pregnant women, estriol is produced in the fetus by the fetal liver and in the placenta. Levels of estriol in the blood and urine can be used to determine whether or not a woman is pregnant, and to monitor the progress of the pregnancy. Abnormal estriol levels can indicate that there is a problem with the developing fetus which could bear closer monitoring or additional testing. The quad screen routinely recommended to pregnant women includes a check on estriol levels.
Estriol can be a weak or strong estrogen depending on if it is given acutely or chronically when given to immature animals, but is an antagonist when given in combination with estradiol. Estriol may play a role in the development of breast cancer, but based on in vitro research, does appear to act as an antagonist to the G-protein coupled estrogen receptor. Though estriol is used as part of the primarily North American phenomenon of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, it is not approved for use by the FDA or Health Canada.
Application:
Hormonal contraception:
A chemical derivative of estradiol, ethinyl estradiol with maximum dosage 200 μg, is a major component of hormonal contraceptive devices. Combined forms of hormonal contraception contain ethinyl estradiol and a progestin, which both contribute to the inhibition of GnRH, LH, and FSH, which accounts for the ability of these birth control methods to prevent ovulation and thus prevent pregnancy. Other types of hormonal birth control contain only progestins and no ethinyl estradiol.
