2. What is Ethynyl estradiol:
Ethinylestradiol (EE) is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen and aderivative of estradiol, the major endogenous estrogen in humans. It is an estrogen that is active when taken by mouth and is used in almost allformulations of combined birth control pills, and is nearly the exclusive estrogen used for this purpose.
EE was patented in 1935 and came into medical use in 1943. It started being used in COCs in 1964.
A semisynthetic alkylated estradiol with a 17-alpha-ethinyl substitution. It has high estrogenic potency when administered orally and is often used as the estrogenic component in oral contraceptives
3. Uses:
Ethinyl Estradiol is a semisynthetic estrogen. Ethinyl estradiol binds to the estrogen receptor complex and enters the nucleus, activating DNA transcription of genes involved in estrogenic cellular responses. This agent also inhibits 5-alpha reductase in epididymal tissue, which lowers testosterone levels and may delay progression of prostatic cancer. In addition to its antineoplastic effects, ethinyl estradiol protects against osteoporosis. In animal models, short-term therapy with this agent has been shown to provide long-term protection against breast cancer, mimicking the antitumor effects of pregnancy.
Ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate combination is also used to treat moderate acne in females who started having menstrual period and also wants to use this medicine for birth control.
